Peshawar Electricity Supply Company (Pesco) Chief Executive Mohammad Qasim Khan has said that the company is facing rupees five to six billion losses per annum due to higher power pilferage and low recovery.
Briefing 42nd meeting of the board of directors of the company held here with Chairman, Wing Commander Jamshid Savul (Retd) in the chair, he said that after assuming the office, he had chalked out strategy for reduction in line losses and enhancement in recovery of the company.
He claimed success in reduction of the line losses by 1.3 percent worth Rs 60 million in the March. He said after taking over as Peco Chief Executive, he was told that there were 30 percent losses in " No Go " areas in NWFP where power pilferage was very high and no action had been taken there.
Giving example of a village in the surrounding of Peshawar, he said that the recovery from this area was only Rs 17,000 as against its total consumption of electricity worth Rs 10 million. He said such areas were in a large number in the province. The board of directors appreciated the last month's efforts of the Pesco under the new Chief Executive, and assured him of full co-operation.
Earlier, the board of directors welcomed Muhammad Qasim Khan on assuming the office of Chief Executive of Pesco and nominated him as member of board of directors. Muhammad Qasim Khan briefly introduced himself to the Chairman and the director. Board of director Anwar-ul-Haq Yousafzai presented comprehensive report about the minutes of 41st meeting.
The board also discussed the current energy crisis in the country and was informed that due to low water level in reservoirs and increase in the power consumption, the gap between supply and demand was increasing with each passing day.
The increase, it said, had now reached to 608 MW during peak hours, leaving the company with no other option than one hour load shedding for four to six times in 24 hours throughout NWFP.
The meeting was informed that to create public awareness and to get their co-operation, energy conservation campaign had also been launched. The board directed for utilisation of all means and resources to get public co-operation in saving maximum energy.
Tahir Basharat Cheema, a member of the board of directors said that according to the statistics, 10 million air-conditioners, refrigerators, deep freezers and washing machines etc had been purchased by the people during the last one year. But it was very strange that the customer's consumption had not increased accordingly, he said.
The board of directors directed the Pesco management to check the customers and bill them according to their actual consumption. Board Chairman Jamshed Savul urged promotion of corporate culture in Pesco, and termed it the only way for survival of the company.
The meeting was attended by Dr Mir Hatam, Ahmad Nawaz Mughal, Tahir Basharat Cheema and Dr Maqbool Khan, members and Pesco's senior management, including Chief Engineer (Operation) Jehanzeb Khan, Chief Engineer (Technical) Nawaz Ali Khan, Chief Engineer (T&G) Rustam Zad Gul, Chief Engineer (Customer Services) Muhammad Wali Khan and Finance Director Anwar-ul-Haq Yousafzai.
