Social distress is a part of every society, but intensity varies as per the level of society. Different people have different nature of anxiety and depression, therefore, they need guidance of clinical psychologists to cope with their personal problems.
Vice-Chancellor GC University (GCU), Professor Dr Khalid Aftab said this while addressing the inaugural session of the 10th National Conference on 'Clinical Psychology in the Service of Community' here on Saturday. "Clinical psychologists should target those segments of society which are generally neglected, the underprivileged, the abandoned, the marginalised, and the oppressed", he said.
"If the clinical psychologists wish to establish themselves as professionals, they will have to pay attention to ethical issues when interacting with clients and others, he added. He urged the clinical psychologists to pool their knowledge and expertise for the greater good of the community.
President of the Pakistan Association of Clinical Psychologists (PACP) and Chairman Clinical Psychology Department, GCU, Professor Dr Zahid Mehmood said that psychology exists within a social-cultural context, therefore, we have to develop an indigenous knowledge base for ourselves. He said that anxiety; stress, depression and other signs of distress are becoming more and more rife in the community.
