Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) President Shamim Ahmed Shamsi has said the KCCI will pursue a medium-term plan, 2015, which includes eight millennium development goals as advocated by the United Nations for the world, including Pakistan.
Addressing first meeting of fairs, exhibition and trade delegations sub-committee of KCCI on Tuesday, he said no visible work had been initiated on eight millennium goals assigned by the UN in 2000, with a target of completing the goal by 2015.
Giving details of the goals, which includes the following: -1) Reduction of poverty, (2) achievement of universal primary education target, (3) promotion of gender equality and empowerment of women, (4) reduction of child mortality, (5) improvement of maternal health, (6) combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, (7) ensuring environmental sustainability and (8) global partnership development.
Shamsi said that international investors were looking toward to the opportunities. If Pakistan provided congenial atmosphere, the international investors would form a beeline to Karachi for investment. He stressed the need for congenial atmosphere in terms of law and order and business-friendly government policies.
He said that the chamber wanted to involve all segments of civil society in its endeavours and wanted to recognise the services rendered by all people of excellence in the development of the society. The chamber was also instituting awards for exemplary services of the various segments of society, he said.
Shamsi said the scheme was under the formation stage and would be announced shortly, and added the KCCI proposed the awards for advocates, journalists, doctors, civil servants, artistes and all other segments of the society.
Referring to international exhibitions, he said that the KCCI members must participate in exhibitions held abroad to introduce Pak products.
The KCCI President said the KCCI was planning to hold a single country exhibition in Italy. Chairman of the sub-committee Abdullah Zaki, referring to the chamber's annual exhibition "My Karachi," said that the chamber had no commercial ambition in organising this event. "We are making our humble contribution in restoring and improving the image of Karachi, which is one of the world's fastest growing cities and the gateway to Central Asia," he said.
