Chief Minister NWFP Amir Haider Khan Hoti has said that the provincial government was going to launch a comprehensive and broad-based strategy for establishment of durable and everlasting peace in the province.
He was speaking on the occasion of first-ever briefing given to him by Corps Commander Peshawar Lieutenant General Masood Alam on law and order and security situation in the province. Such kind of briefing has already been given by Chief of Army Staff to the top national leadership at Islamabad.
The briefing, which held at Chief Minister's Secretariat Peshawar, was also attended by provincial president Awami National Party (ANP) Afrasiab Khattak, Pakistan People's Party (PPP) NWFP president Rahimdad Khan, Zahid Khan, NWFP Chief Secretary Sahibzada Riaz Noor and others.
In his detailed briefing, Corps Commander underlined to address the root causes of extremism and terrorism on priority basis for brining peace and normalcy to the troubled regions in the province including Swat, Fata and Pata.
He suggested that talks were the only solution to get rid of militancy in the region. Speaking on this occasion, NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti said the country, particularly the frontier province was facing numerous challenges and is at most critical juncture of it history.
"We have to sit together to sort out solutions to the problems and the challenges and efforts would be made in consultations with all political forces besides reviving jirga system in the troubled districts," Hoti said.
He called for developing consensus on all the issues being faced by the province, cautioning that ignoring the challenges would result into further destruction. He said that peace jirgas will be constituted at local level involving political and religious leaders, public representatives and tribal chiefs, adding maintaining peace in the province was the top most priority of his government.
ANP provincial president Afrasiab Khattak on the occasion called for realising the fact that talks were the only solution to bring peace in the troubled and insurgency plagued areas. "Force is no solution to any problem. We should try to resolve all the issues through dialogue process," Khattak opined. He expressed the hope that with joint efforts of the government taking along the coalition partners will definitely bear positive results.
"We believe in joint efforts and every effort should be made after developing consensus over an issue," Afrasiab added. Rahimdad Khan said that the people of the country had given them a mandate, who want peace and their mandate should not be disgraced. He described the stability of the institutions a key to the success of a system.
