The All Karachi Transport Ittehad (Akti) has threatened to observe wheel-jam strike, for indefinite period, from April 17, if the government did not pay compensation to transporters who lost lives and vehicles in April 9 incident in the city.
Akti president Irshad Hussain Bukhari told Business Recorder on Friday that the "transporters have decided, in a meeting, to observe strike from April 17 for indefinite period, if losses were not compensated by the government".
He said that the incidents of violence and arson left two drivers killed and six other injured, while over 25 public transports were torched by miscreants, the cost of which was estimated at over Rs 35 million. He demanded of the government to pay compensation of Rs 0.5 million to the transporters' families who lost their life and provided Rs 0.25 million to those who were injured.
