Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) President Arif Nizami has flayed the manhandling and torturing of mediamen and photo journalists, who were covering violent events of April 9 at City Courts here, by armed men of a political organisation.
In a statement on Friday, he said armed men snatched cameras from the TV cameraman, tortured them and damaged their vehicles. Condemning such incidents, Nizami said the government should take notice of the violence against the journalists, besides bringing the culprits to justice.
He demanded of the government to order high level judicial inquiry and providing protection to journalists, media photographers and TV cameramen. The CPNE President also appealed to leaders of the political parties and other institutions to condemn the violence against journalists. He said that only freedom of press could guarantee political, democratic and economic freedom.
