The Energy Audits and Manage Programme (EAMP) in Lahore and Faisalabad has produced effective result in textile sector by saving about 15 percent of the energy cost in spinning and 20-25 percent in processing, has reduced electricity and gas bills.
This was disclosed in an awareness session on "Energy Efficiency in Textile Sector", held at the University of Faisalabad in collaboration with the National Productivity Organisation (NPO) with the Chairman, Faisalabad Garment City Company, Sheikh Mukhtar Ahmad in chair.
The project in charge, NPO, Ashfaq A Sheikh said the NPO through the Energy Efficiency Programme (EEP) was working preventive measures for minimising the production cost. "We are trying to bring the results of the EEP taking into account the interests of both the government and industry", he commented.
He also vowed to expand and replicate best practices for achieving the EEP target in textile sector. The international expert of Asian Productivity Organisation, Pawan Kumar, highlighted the scope of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (REEE). He apprised the gathering of his endeavours to conduct energy audits and manage three textile units. He said two units in Lahore and one in Faisalabad saved about 15 percent of the energy cost in spinning and 20-25 percent in processing thus reducing electricity and gas bills.
He outlined various measures like assess the techniques and equipment used in production processes, check them for efficiency; employ systems, materials and equipment that increase energy efficiency.
Defining the energy auditing process, he opined that it is like recording, analysing and reporting energy consumption and cost on a regular basis, just as financial accounting is used for the effective management of an organisation,
"Energy auditing is critical to energy management. It can be one of the most cost-effective tools that can be used to cut energy costs. Role of energy auditor is like that of a charted accountant. As means to save energy you should first ascertain where the most energy is being wasted then concentrate on conducting its audit. Energy auditor should observe how energy is being used, how much is consumed and what are its costs", he added.
Further, he stressed various measures for saving energy in industry like regular monitoring of AC plants, Boilers, Motors, Ventilation, Lighting and all other instruments.
Further, he described in detail a mill's process and pointed out every part of the instrument and how that should be in optimal position. He suggested that inefficient motors should be replaced with high efficient motors. Appliances and plumbing systems operate more efficiently with the use of soft water and last longer. Water heaters can consume up to 22 percent less energy with soft water than with hard water, he told adding that compressors become a focal point for energy efficiency improvement strategies hence high efficient screw compressor should be installed.
The expert also recommended the industries to keep all analysing metres like Aemo, Lux, Infrared, Stroboscop, Belt tension, Degital Hygro, non-contact Ultrasonic Flow, portable pH with Fuel Gas, TDS analyser and Lube oil Test Kit to monitor the energy efficiency. The Vice Chancellor, University of Faisalabad, DR Abdul urged the industry to economise use of energy apart from accelerating its production as that shall reduce energy costs for them.
