The aircraft landing and taking off at Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad airports face the danger of getting hit by the birds flying freely around these airports. According to a Civil Aviation authority (CAA) press release the number of birds hovering around the garbage dumps near these airports are causing increasing danger to incoming and departing aircraft.
Bird strike costs the airlines world-wide nearly $3.5 billion annually directly or indirectly. It has now become an economic and social issue. Groups affected by this hazard include airlines, aircraft and engine manufacturer, airport management, flight crew and local/provincial governments.
Abbas M. Petiwala, President, Safety and Investigation Board, CAA said that the Authority has taken special measures to ensure that all the airports remain free from any garbage so that birds do not get attracted to the area. Bird shooters have been deployed at specified times during increased flying activity near the runways to scare the birds away from the flight path of aircraft.
CAA urged citizens living near the airports for co-operation and requested that foodstuff and garbage should not be thrown in the open. This would help in reducing bird hazard to minimum level. During the last one week, there has been an increase in the birds striking the aircraft at Karachi and Lahore airports, the press release said.-PR
