Karachiites organised a number of activities on Tuesday to observe the Mother Earth Day and highlight the significance of the internationally valued Day on environmental protection.
The 38th Earth Day observance was also aimed at creating awareness among residents of the planet to make the Earth clean and pollution-free. The main activity was witnessed at People's Secretariat from where a rally led by Sindh Information Minister Shazia Marri passed through Jinnah Mausoleum with the minister, vowing to make necessary amendments to environmental laws and including a subject on environment in academic curriculum.
The walk was organised by Sindh Environmental Protection and Alternative Energy Resources Department. Different schools, colleges, civil society organisations, NGOs and other governmental and private sector organisations arranged different activities on this occasion. Prominent among them was a special event organised by Brooks Grammar School at Hill Park to mark the importance of the Day.
The students of the school delivered speeches on the topic 'how to save and protect our Earth'. The students also presented tableau on this occasion. The students of pre-primary sector picked littered articles and collected them in polythene bags.
Speaking on this occasion, Sadia Iftikhar, the principal of the school, highlighted the importance of the 'Earth Day'. She said the main objective of these activities is to create awareness among the students and the younger generation about the adverse effects of pollution on the environment. "We should think that plants and greenery are very important for our Earth and they play an important role in containing pollution.
She advised the students to play their role to make Karachi as a "clean and green" and pollution-free city. Shazia Nazir, head, pre-primary Section and others also spoke on this occasion and highlighted the importance of the Day while a large number of students participated in the different activities on this occasion.
