The Punjab Food Department has confiscated 1600 bags of wheat and 2100 of wheat-flour at check-posts set up in various areas following a crackdown against illegal movement of wheat to other provinces.
A department spokesman while giving details on Tuesday said the action had been taken at the check-posts at Farooqia Interchange Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Kot Sabzal Rahim Yar Khan, Rojhan Rajanpur, Jinnah Barrage Mianwali, Hasilpur and D G Khan.
He said his department had taken special measures and officials of food department, district management and police have been deployed at check-posts to stop the illegal movement of wheat to other provinces.
He said these posts would remain functional till the completion of wheat procurement campaign in the province. He said that to check the wheat smuggling, the department was contacting district co-ordination officers in the province and food controllers had also been directed to take effective measures in this regard.
Giving details of procurement, the spokesman said the department had till date procured 17,594 tons of wheat at its various procurement centres.
While it has also distributed more than 28, 35,000 gunny bags amongst the growers. He said all possible facilities are being provided to the growers at wheat procurement centres and payment of the wheat purchased from the growers is being made through the nearest bank branches.
