The ongoing power struggle between the Sindh government and Karachi city government further intensified on Saturday when the former dismissed Rauf Akhtar Farooqui, Chief Controller of Karachi Building Control Authority (KBCA) from his office.
According to sources, the Sindh government's Services and General Administration Department through a notification directed the Chief Controller to immediately report back to the Department. They said that the Sindh government had appointed Manzoor Qadir Chachar as new Chief Controller of the Authority.
The tussle on show of power started on April 24 when the Sindh government, through a couple of notifications, terminated Karachi Nazim Mustafa Kamal as chairman of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) and KBCA.
In a tit for tat move the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) on April 25 declared the KWSB and KBCA as city government's Group of Offices (GoOs), terming Sindh government's notifications as illegal.
The city government also issued two notifications and appointed Rauf Akhtar Farooqui, Chief Controller of KBCA and Ghulam Arif Khan as Managing Director of KWSB as Executive District Officers of the Building Control and Water and Sanitation GoOs of the CDGK respectively.
When contacted, City Naib Nazim Nasrin Jalil refused to comment on the situation, saying that she could not comment on the matter in the absence of Mustafa Kamal who was reportedly out of the country. While mobile phone of the City Nazim Mustafa Kamal was found "powered off", cell phone of Sindh Information Minister Shazia Murri kept ringing when this reporter tried to contact the two officials.
