The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore celebrated the World Veterinary Day in a befitting manner here on Saturday. The theme of the day was "Diversity of the Profession".
A seminar was arranged to mark the day. University of Health Sciences Lahore vice-chancellor Professor Dr Malik Hussain Mubbashir was chief guest on the occasion while UVAS vice-chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Nawaz, Professor Dr Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry, Professor Dr Talat Nascer Pasha, faculty members and students attended.
Addressing on the occasion, Professor Dr Malik Hussain Mubbashir said that veterinary profession was a vast field and veterinarians had to play a diversified role in their professional life. He called for close collaboration between the health and veterinary professionals to check the increasing diseases of human beings. "Health sciences professionals can't progress until they work in close collaboration with veterinarians," he said, adding that the veterinarians' role was even more important in public health, food security and food safety. He said that veterinarians had great potential but that was still unexplored.
UVAS vice-chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Nawaz said that livestock had more than 50 percent contribution to agricultural GDP but its share always remained unacknowledged.
He said that we have to focus on livestock sector if we want to alleviate poverty in the country. He spoke in detail about the areas/fields where veterinarians can serve the nation and have successful careers. He said that there was one veterinary doctor for 46,000 animals in the country and that there was 8 to 35 percent population growth of animals in recent years. The VC asked the university students to work hard to achieve their goals in life.
Earlier Professor Dr Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry and Professor Dr Irshad Hussain gave separate presentations on 'Role Veterinarians in Public Health'. They spoke about the diseases spread from animals to human and how to control these diseases. A message of the former president of the World Veterinary Association was also read on the occasion.
