Dozens of armed men on Monday tried to take over the Govt MAO College by kicking out a student group backed by the PML-Q. Up to 40-armed men entered the college early on Monday morning and occupied buildings to kick out the PML-supported student group. The armed men resorted aerial firing for 30 minutes.
The gangsters started firing when activists of Muslim Students Federation (MSF) reached the college around 8:45am. It is interesting to mention here that a small contingent of police reached the college around 9.30am giving enough time to the gangsters to show off.
College students and teachers said the armed men claimed themselves to be "student-leaders" of the MSF-N. They also chanted pro PML-N slogans. They had even displayed a banner on the college building of the Post-graduate Block, favouring PML-N leaders.
The gangsters managed to escape when a heavy contingent of police arrived. The police entered the college premises, locking the main gates and cleared the area. Federal Minister for Culture and Youth Affairs Khawja Saad Rafiq has condemned the incident, saying some elements involved in the incident had been arrested and more arrests would be made. He also said the government would start an operation in 15 days against criminals.
