Model traffic policing will be introduced here by June 2008 to streamline traffic system especially during peak hours and inject more latest vehicles in the traffic police, said SSP Traffic Peshawar Jafer Khan.
In an exclusive chat with APP here on Tuesday, the In-charge of Peshawar Traffic Police said the arrangements in this regard had almost been finalised and the department was ready to kick off the new system.
The SSP traffic, who has to his credit launching of latest computerised driving licence with international standard security features, has made various measures to put affairs of the traffic system in the city on right track. Jafer Khan said under the model traffic system, traffic vehicles coloured on the pattern of Islamabad and motorway police would roll on the city roads round the clock.
He said under the new system of arrangements the revenue being generated by traffic police from ticketing etc in Peshawar district had now been put at the disposal of Headquarters Traffic Police previously it were at the disposal of the AIG Traffic.
He said that 250 to 300 police officials would soon join the city traffic fleet raising its strength from the present 650 to around 1,000. The new induction, he said would certainly improve the traffic system in the congested areas of the city during rush hours.
To a question, he said, the city traffic police generated about three million rupees a month through fine, of which 15 percent was utilised by the traffic police, while the rest was deposited in the provincial kitty. To avoid rush during peak hours, he said one-way traffic was being introduced in the congested areas and sought peoples help and assistance in making efforts a success as according to him initially the people expressed annoyance over it.
He said one-way traffic had now been introduced in the hub of medical centres Dabgari Gardens where there was even no place to walk on foot in the evening due to heavy rush of the motorists and long queues of vehicles could be seen in-front of the doctors clinic.
