The Punjab food department has bought over 586,141 metric tonnes of wheat in the Wheat Procurement Campaign, 2008. The procurement is being done through 198 permanent and 147 temporary procurement centres set up throughout the province, said Punjab Food Minister Malik Nadeem Kamran while chairing a meeting held with regard to review the wheat procurement drive.
He also told the meeting that the department had distributed over 11.7 million of gunny bags to help farmers bring their produce to the food department procurement centres. Giving the break-up of procured wheat, the minister said the department had procured 77,359 metric tonnes of wheat from Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur and Okara, 58,597 metric tonnes from Gujranwala and Gujrat, 69,545 metric tonnes from Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh and Jhang, 22,221 metric tonnes from Sargodha, Bhakkar and Mianwali, 82,300 metric tonnes from Multan, Lodhran, Vehari, Sahiwal, Pakpattan and Khanewal, 79 tonnes from Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Chakwal, 110,063 metric tonnes from Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur and Layyah, and 155,878 metric tonnes from Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar and Rahim Yar Khan.
He also said about the break-up of distributed gunny bags amongst the farmers in different districts. He said 1,210,813 gunny bags were distributed in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur and Okara growers, 1,234,454 bags amongst farmers of Gujranwala and Gujrat, 1,367,811 bags in Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh and Jhang, 486,905 bags in Sargodha, Mianwali and Bhakkar, 1,799,985 bags in Multan, Lodhran, Vehari, Sahiwal, Pakpattan and Khanewal, 2,338,178 bags in Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur and Layyah, 2,440 bags in Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Chakwal, and 3,349,065 gunny bags amongst the farmers of Bahwalpur, Bahawalnagar and Rahim Yar Khan. He said that last year after first 10 days of the wheat procurement drive, daily procurement was 60,000 tonnes but this year it has touched 100,000 tonnes daily.
