Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has said that Pakistan was facing threats of terrorism, sectarianism, law and order and we have to restore peace and normalcy in the country to attract foreign investment and to bring prosperity and solidarity.
Addressing a big gathering at the residence of Malik Ahmed Hussain Dehar at Durrana Langana, a suburb of Multan on Sunday he said that we have to spend maximum funds on our defence for country's security.
He pledged to restore 1973 Constitution, reinstate judiciary and institutions as well as ensure freedom of the press. 'I promise you that we will fight for the freedom of the Press and judiciary. We will abolish PEMRA laws', he said.
While addressing a public gathering here at Army Ground during his first visit to his hometown, after becoming the premier, he said that the manifesto of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto would be transformed into reality.'Their manifesto was roti, kapra aur makan and I promise you to implement it in letter and spirit', he assured the public.
He said that the PPP had come into power just 35 days back and it would fulfil all of its promises made to the public. He said that it was for the first time in the parliamentary history of Pakistan that a Prime Minister was given a unanimous vote of confidence by the entire assembly.
'The nation has expressed full confidence in our coalition with Nawaz Sharif, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Asfandyar Wali and other allies. I salute the nation and our allies', he added.
He said that his govt would leave no stone unturned to develop backward areas to bring these areas at par with developed areas He said that our Government would do double work than the previous regime only in ten months which they could not do in eight years.'Almighty Allah has awarded a golden opportunity to the backward areas like South Punjab. I am in Multan for two days and will announce such a package for this region which will make the public realise that we have done some thing for them practically', he added.
The Premier said that the package would include colleges, schools, university, gas supply and power generation projects as well as employment schemes. 'We will offer jobs to the unemployed youth so that the poor do not commit suicide due to hunger. We will implement PPP's manifesto', he pledged.
He said that some people used to say that there was no democracy in the party. 'Today I want to ask these people that why didn't Asif Zardari and the sister of Benazir Bhutto took over the office of Prime Minister and gave it to you people while they could have done so?' he posed a question.
He said that the PPP was symbol of federation as its branches were spread in all four provinces, Azad Kashmir and abroad. He expressed his gratitude to Bilawal Zardari Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari for expressing confidence in him. 'The entire country has witnessed the triumph of democratic forces after the polls.
The people have voted for the manifesto and programmes presented by the parties before them. They have voted for restoration of 1973 Constitution, freedom of Press and strengthening of institutions, he added.
Yousaf Raza Gilani said that his govt inherited problems like price hike, however, the PPP was accustomed to face the hardships. 'When Bhutto took over the reign in 1970, the country was disintegrated and national exchequer was empty but PPP restored the dignity of the country, launched nuclear plan and strengthened its defence', he added.
He said that the previous rulers remained in power for eight years but they did not produce even a single megawatt of electricity. He said that the PPP was determined to solve the problems.
'We're not power-hungry. We'll adopt a sensible line of action and serve Multan and Pakistan. We'll honestly discharge the responsibility given to us by the voters', he said.
Earlier Syed Ahmed Mujtaba Gilani said that his brother took the charge when the country was in the grip of terrorism and everywhere suicidal attacks and bomb blasts were reported but now with the grace of Almighty, situation is different from the past. Malik Ahmed Hussain Dehar MPA demanded that Multan airport be declared as an international airport, journalists colony be developed as early as possible.
Journalists of Multan be sent abroad on official tours, on Haj and Umra, high schools of his constituency must be upgraded as higher secondary schools. Further he demanded that loans of small farmers be waived, like the industrialists who got their loans written off, Multan be declared as tax-free zone to attract investors, motorway should be connected with Multan. Presently it was designed to turn from Shamkot which is not acceptable to us. Big city allowance be given to government employees of Multan.
