Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that media is the fourth pillar of the state, which can neither be depressed nor purchased. He said this in a press conference at the Multan Press Club last Saturday evening.
He said that media has played a vital role in the freedom of judiciary which is commendable. The freedom of press is the surety of the freedom of individual, he added. The current law is full of flaws and we want to change it. Under this law, we will ensure the safety of the journalists and improve their salaries.
Yousuf Raza Gilani said that the work has been started changing the laws of Pemra. He said that it is the duty of the media to play its role in the stability of the democracy and institutions. He announced an immediate grant of Rs 5 million and an annual grant of Rs 1 million for the Multan Press Club. He said that colony would be established for the journalists of Multan.
Prime Minister Gilani said that there are two bigger problems which our government is facing now, first, the situation of law and order and secondly, the economical stability. He said that when there would be political stability in the country, then ultimately the country would be strong economically too.
Later, he announced a special package for Multan. The details of this package are as follows. All the projects would be completed in five years and Nespak would prepare the feasibility reports of all the projects. Six housing schemes of low-budget would be established in six different towns of the city and its land would be provided by the district or provincial government. The funds will be provided by the federal government.
Multan-Faisalabad Motorway project would be started in July 2008 by the NHA. Ghazi Ghaat Bridge would be built on the River Chanab and Nespak would soon start working on it. Northern and southern bypasses would be built with 50 million rupees and would be completed in June 2009. Many other ring roads, link roads and two-way road projects were announced by the Prime Minister which would be completed in June 2009.
The Multan airport would be expanded and will be made an international airport. The work on this project will be started in June 2008. Different water and sewerage schemes worth Rs 5,924 million would be completed in the city. The work on the project of Women University will be started in July 2008. A cadet college would be made in the city. Five girls colleges and two boys colleges would be established. The Prime Minister also announced the immediate provision of 15 buses for girls college.
The technical students would be provided overseas opportunities. The two libraries in the city would also be upgraded. The project for the renovation of the Qasim Bagh was also announced and its attached stadium would be converted into international football stadium.
He said that power looms associations, industrialists and agriculture sector will make a joint strategy for Wapda. So that Wapda could solve the problem of electricity. Prime Minister Special Initiative Programme would be started in the district to make it a model district regarding the health sector. Basic Health Units would be provided with doctors and medicines.
Work on judicial complex would be soon started soon and Cancer Ward in Nishtar Hospital would be upgraded to 100 more beds. He also announced the provision of two buses for Nishtar Hospital.
Yousaf Raza Gilani said that a special committee will be formed under my presidency that will look after these projects. Talking about the arrested workers of power looms, Prime Minister said that as it is a provincial matter, so I have talked to Shahbaz Sharif and he said that the workers of power looms would be released on Sunday.
