All Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA) has submitted the constitutional amendment bill at National Assembly Secretariat for allocation of minority seats in the Senate. The bill demands that two seats from each province and one from the Federal Capital should be allocated for the minorities.
The minorities also demanded that their seats in national and provincial assemblies should also be doubled. Addressing a joint press conference here Sunday, the Chairman APMA and MNA Shahbaz Bhatti along with MPA Punjab Pervez Rafiq said that during the consultation process on the bill the leadership of several political parties have assured their support.
Shahbaz Bhatti said that before 2002 general elections, the number of general seats in the National Assembly, Senate and Provincial Assemblies had been increased. He said the number of reserved seats for women had also been increased in National and Provincial Assemblies, but minorities have been deprived.
He said in the Upper House of the parliament seats have been reserved for women, Ulema, technocrats and for Fata whereas the minorities can't represent their people in the House as no seat was reserved for them. Shahbaz Bhatti said that during 2008 election, the minorities have fielded candidates for more than seventy National Assembly constituencies and they played an important role in the victory of PPP.
