A project review meeting of Rs 8.68 billions entirely funded by Higher education Commission (HEC) was held here with the Advisor Finance and Planning M. Sarwar Khan in the chair. During the meeting, the project directors explained the status of the project with respect to the work plan and to the stated objectives.
They examined the quality of work, difficulties encountered and impact of the demonstrations, phase wise. Regarding the project "Strengthening of Existing Earthquake Engineering Center at UET Peshawar, it was informed that project approved at the cost of Rs 487.219 million is running successfully. The center aims to achieve its objective by promoting education and awareness among all facets of society and by carrying out target oriented need based research programmes.
The plan includes installation of 6m sq. shake table and huge pseudo dynamic and base isolation testing facilities. Foundation for installation of the shake table is being laid at the center and consultation to buy the equipment with the world class industry is in progress.
In Human Resource Development (HRD) component, it was informed that nine scholars have been sent overseas to pursue Ph. D in respective fields. Advisor Finance Sarwar Khan, however, directed to collect progress reports of scholars from hosting universities, as according to the clear directions of Higher education Commission (HEC), no fund will be allowed unless the progress reports of scholars are not monitored properly. The center after completion of its strengthening phase this year, will be regarded as one of the biggest research centers in the world.
Regarding another mega project "provision of academic research facilities for Gemstone Development Cell" (GDC), which is aimed to develop expertise in precious stones and to develop man power in gemstone industry in Pakistan by imparting training to students. It was learnt that PC I cost of Rs 32 929m, Rs 10m have been utilised while underHuman Resource Development (HRD).
Three faculty members will be sent in Fall this year for Ph.D in the relevant fields.So far, the Gemstone Development Cell (GDC) has been set up at Peshawar Campus and offering professional training on gemmology to a large number of students.-PR
