The customs officials have threatened to observe strike again, if the remaining suspended officials of the department are not reinstated early. Sources in Customs department told Business Recorder on Wednesday that the officials had earlier resumed their duties on the assurance of high-ups that the issue will be resolved within ten days.
"Collector of Preventive, Muhammad Yahya and Chief Collector Munir Qureshi assured all customs officials in a meeting to reinstate all suspended officials within 10 days and to take legal action against those if found involved in this scam," sources added.
Despite the assurance, the concerned officials, who are probing the matter, have failed to identify the actual offenders behind the scam, sources maintained.
They alleged that the investigating team seems to be more interested to prolong the investigation aimed at concealing actual facts. Sources said that a committee comprising senior customs officials would meet the concerned officials to resolve the matter as soon as possible.
The sources claimed that the low ranking officials let the consignments pass through Customs Care System without scrutiny and physical examination on the directives of the high officials. They termed FBR decision discriminatory, arguing that they had no power to examine and verify the consignments physically.
It may be mentioned that Preventive Collector had issued suspension order of 25 customs officials on the charges of clearing hundreds of containers under fake GDs.
In response to the administrative decision, strong reaction came from customs officials, who halted all customs activities for a day in protest. The Collectorate had to annul the suspension orders of 14 officials and reinstate them the next day, while rests are still to be reinstated.
