The government has extended watercourses improvement project for further two years under the National Programme for Improvement of Watercourses to cop up the agricultural production.
Punjab Minister for Agriculture, Ahmad Ali Aulakh chairing a meeting at the Agriculture House on Thursday said that the previous government had set aside more than Rs 28 million to complete 30,000 watercourses in the Punjab, including canal commend areas and rain fed tract.
Moreover, the previous government had failed to reach its target and only completed 17,560 watercourses against a target of 30,000 in the past four years -- from 2004-05 and 2007-08. The minister said the remaining 23,560 watercourses would be improved and ordered functionaries of the Water Management Wing of Agriculture Department to achieve the target of improvement of 5,000 watercourses in 2008-09.
