As the weather is now warming up in the upper regions of the country, the water inflows in the four rivers have improved by about 50,000 cusecs in a couple of days. The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has also started refilling of three water reservoirs, Tarbela, Mangla and Chashma from Thursday by retaining some quantity of the river run off water.
Wapda officials told Business Recorder that though belated, the summer is now setting in on the mountains resulting in increased inflows in the rivers. They said since the snow is melting, the combined inflows of the four rivers , Indus Kabul, Jhelum and Chenab went up to 1,83,000 cusecs on Thursday as compared to past weeks inflows of about 130,000 cusecs.
They said out of the present inflows of 70,500 cusecs in River Indus at Tarbela, the engineers are outflowing 60,000 cusecs and retaining 10,500 cusecs in the dam which had touched the dead level of 1,369 ft early this month. About 8,000 cusecs water is being retained in the Mangla Dam on River Jhelum while 40,000 cusecs water is released for downstream water requirements. The position of the river inflows/outflows at Tarbeta, Mangla and Chashma along with the reservoirs levels and the barrages on Thursday was as under:
RIVERS: Indus at Tarbela Inflows 70,500 cusecs and outflows 60,000 cusecs, Kabul at Nowshera: Inflows 35,400 cusecs and outflows 35,400 cusecs, Indus at Chashma: inflows 92,000 cusecs and outflows 80,000 cusecs, Jhelum at Manqia: Inflows 47,800 cusecs and outflows 40,000 cusecs, Chenab at Marala: inflows 30.100 cusecs and outflows 20,400 cusecs.
