More than 4.3 million acres of land would be brought under paddy crop during Kharif season 2008 in various rice growing areas of the Punjab. Agriculture department sources told newsmen here on Tuesday that Basmati would be sown over 3.67 million acres, while Irri would be cultivated on 629,000 acres during the period in Punjab.
In Sialkot district, paddy crop would be cultivated over 451,000 acres of land in four Tehsils including Sambrial, Daska, Pasrur and Sialkot. They said that agriculture department had already initiated Farmers Training Programme to impart necessary training to the paddy growers about the preparation of nurseries and cultivation of paddy crop aimed at attaining the target fixed for the province.
During first phase of the programme, the rice growers would be imparted necessary training before sowing of paddy nurseries. In Sialkot district, the first phase of training programme is being carried out in 1,450 villages of four Tehsils of the district and it will be accomplished by the end of this month. In second phase, the rice growers would be imparted training about the utilisation of modern agriculture technology, use of pesticides and fertilisers etc.
The local agriculture department had already deputed special training teams for providing proper guidance and assistance about the use of inputs, nursery sowing and transfer of plants into fields to the rice growers in the district. Meanwhile, the Agriculture department had directed the paddy growers that they should use recommended and authenticated paddy seed for obtaining quality paddy crop and maximum per acre yield, sources said.
