The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has asked the Sales Tax Collectorates to provide complete records of eight more taxpaying companies along with the names of their processing officers.
According to sources, the NAB has sought complete records of eight more taxpaying units including some well-known multinational companies along with the name of taxmen, who cleared their sales tax refund claims, through letter 10357-0/1/CVC-3600/IO/2 NAB Sindh/2008.
Meanwhile, the official activities at all sales tax offices are still suspended where no RPO has been issued for last five days. When contacted, the members of action committee said that memorandum has been signed by over 100 taxmen in which they vowed not to resume work until the concerned authority would not restrain NAB from taking action against them.
They have demanded amendment in Sales Tax Act to facilitate taxmen and if amendment is not possible, they said the authority should issue directives to shutdown STARR, which creates immense problems for taxmen.
They said that on one hand the sales tax officials have been accused of not verifying the section 73 documents, while on the other, the manufacturers have been exempted from submitting the said documents as per Refund Rules.
They said that NAB also alleged sales tax officials of not verifying bank documents before clearing refunds claims, whereas Collectorate has no mechanism to verify the bank documents submitted by taxpayers.
They urged the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to make its vigilance wing active so that legal action can be taken against responsible officials. They hoped that it would help eradicate the role of NAB in the departmental issues.
