The Toronto Stock Exchange benchmark S&P/TSX composite index briefly topped 15,000 early Tuesday for the first time, bolstered by soaring Canadian energy and gold stocks.
The index climbed over the threshold at the opening bell, and sat at 15,090 at about 1:00 pm local time (1700 GMT), up more than 100 points, before slipping back down amid fears of a snag in the buyout of Canadian telecom giant BCE.
The Toronto index was up almost 25 percent from a recent low in January, with energy companies EnCana and Suncor Energy leading the push. The TSX energy sub-group soared almost 50 percent since January, amid record high oil prices.
