The Lahore High Court on Friday adjourned, till May 30 2008, hearing of a petition filed against the wheat procurement policy of the Punjab government. Petitioner Mohammad Farooque Bajwa has taken the plea that the Food Department of Punjab government and Passco were forcibly and illegally procuring wheat from the growers against the latter's will at a price much lower than the farmers' production cost.
The petitioner has requested the court to restrain the government from this "illegal and unconstitutional" act, and protect the interests and rights of the growers. Deputy Attorney General and Deputy Advocate General appeared in the court of Justice Syed Asghar Haider and sought a week's adjournment of the hearing so that the government could file its reply.
