Sindh Information Minister Shazia Mari has said that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) fully believed in the independence of judiciary and the government is in process to develop a constitutional package to strengthen is important institution.
It needed to be in such a way so that it could protect the fundamental rights of the people, as guaranteed in the Constitution of Pakistan, she told media at the University of East Latifabad, Hyderabad, late on Friday evening.
Earlier, she chaired a seminar on "Current challenges of Pakistan", organised by the Institute of Current Affairs of the University. She said all political, social and economic problems being experienced by the people of the country were because of a weakened judiciary.
"But now PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari with the support of coalition partners is working to bring constitutional package not only to strengthen the judiciary but also to protect the fundamental rights of the people," she said. Responding to a question, she said Pakistan Muslim League (N) was an important ally of the government and had signed the charter of democracy to plug all the ways of anti-democracy factors.
She said Nawaz Sharif had played important role for restoration of democracy and hoped that he would continue the same. Responding another question, Shazia Mari paid rich tributes to the journalists who scarified for freedom of news and views.
She said PPP government believed in freedom of expression and considered it essential for democracy and development of the country. She said after the next budget, PPP government would announce certain policies for the welfare of journalists, and added the government was to support the Press but not to control it.
Earlier, addressing the seminar, Sindh Information Minister said that PPP was the only party having close contact with people at grassroots levels. She said PPP was the party, which had sacrificed lot for the cause of democracy and development of the country.
She said PPP leaders had even proved that they were not bothered about their personal security, especially when they were working for the cause of democracy and prosperity of the people. She said, "we achieved the glorious victory on February 18, but actual success of the people is still ahead for which PPP is striving".
She reaffirmed the commitment that PPP would keep all provinces united and make the country stronger in all sense. She said Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had scarified their lives but never compromised on the security of state and its peoples.
She said, "Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto gave the nuclear power to his nation and made it so stronger that today we were enable to talk with US on equal basis". Ex-MPA Kulsoom Nizamani in her speech said the mandate given by the people was a great responsibility of the ruling party to make the country as welfare state.
