The application of Basmati Growers Association (BGA) for registration of Basmati as geographical indication has been accepted by the Trade Marks Registrar (TMR), Government of Pakistan.
According to a handout, Punjab Secretary Commerce and Investment, Tahir Raza Naqvi said that the application was filed in December 2005 and TMR had rejected all oppositions to the application, except partially accepting Rice Export Association of Pakistan (Reap) plea.
Details of this decision will be released within a few days, he said, and added that this is a great achievement for Pakistan and Basmati rice sector including farmers, exporters, traders and scientists.
