Pakistan People's Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has said that Pakistan will be a stronger and more stable democratically when the present government becomes able to resolve all constitutional and legal issues through democratic consensus. He was talking to two separate congressional delegations that called on him here on Monday.
The two sides discussed important issues, including the bilateral relations between Pakistan and the US. Asif Ali Zardari briefed the visiting US Congressmen and Senators on various steps the PPP had taken so far to strengthen the process of national reconciliation.
He said that the party gave high importance to Pakistan-US relations and wanted to improve it further for the benefit of the people here. The first congressional delegation was led by Rep Adam Schiff, the member of House Permanent Committee on Intelligence, and included Rep Allyson Schwartz, the member of Democracy Assistance Committee of the US Congress.
The second delegation was led by Senator Russ Fiengold of Foreign Relation Committee and Special Committee on Intelligence and was accompanied by the US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne W. Patterson. The visiting delegations expressed their optimism that under a democratic government in Pakistan, the US-Pakistan relations would further strengthen.
They appreciated the PPP's strong stance and position on global terrorism. Zardari was assisted by Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Defence Minister Ahmad Mukhtar, Ambassador-designate to the United States Hussain Haqqani and National Security Advisor Lieutenant General Mehmood Ali Durrani.
