Professor, Dr M Ajmal Khan, Botany department, Karachi University, has said that salinity hit land can be converted to agricultural land with a little effort. He expressed his views during his presentation on "Halophytes: Non-conventional crop for saline conditions," at Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Monday.
He said that these lands can be used for producing different crops, which could help boost exports coupled with meeting local requirement. Meanwhile, he pointed out that Pakistan, has second biggest canal network for irrigation in the world, but there are still very huge areas in Balochistan and Sindh facing irrigation water shortage and salinity.
Furthermore, he maintained that people living in water logged areas have no choice but to use water for drinking purposes, which is unfit for human consumption. Moreover, he said that if these barren and water logged lands are reclaimed, they could be used for agriculture purposes, adding that in this regard private and public partnership could play an effective role for the project of reclaiming barren and water logged lands.
