Rain brought action on the third day of the French Open at Roland Garros to a halt at 1518 local time (1318GMT) on Tuesday after earlier downpours had already caused a delay of almost three hours. When the rain arrived, only Russian duo Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dinara Safina had completed their first round matches.
Fourth seed Kuznetsova had seen off Japan's Aiko Nakamura 6-2, 6-3 while Safina, the 13th seed, had defeated Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine 6-1, 6-3. Only 90 minutes play was possible on the Philippe Chatrier Court where former world number one Amelie Mauresmo was facing Olga Savchuk of Ukraine while around 60 minutes of action took place on each of the other courts.
By 1730 (1530GMT) 30 of the day's programmed 72 first round matches had been rescheduled for Wednesday including women's top seed Maria Sharapova's clash against Russian compatriot Evgeniya Rodina. If the rain relents, Rafael Nadal, the triple men's champion, will be due to face Brazilian qualifier Thomaz Bellucci.
