The rupee gave up it weekend's firmness versus dollar in the interbank market on Monday, losing 60 paisa for buying at 66.90 and it also lost 50 piasa for selling at 67.00, dealers said. They attributed the fall in the rupee to higher demand by the importers to make e payments amid short supply of the US currency due to market closure.
It is expected that the rupee would recover its gains after the improvement of supply of dollar, they said. In the first session of the Asian markets, dollar was boosted by gains against the Australian dollar and pound, though many investors waited for US data this week to see if the reports reinforce expectations for higher interest rates.
The Aussie dollar fell on data showing that Australian retail sales unexpectedly fell, prompting investors to see less risk of the country's central bank lifting rates further from the already steep 7.25 percent.
OPEN MARKET RATES: Bullish sentiment was seen on the open market as the rupee gained 10 paisa against the dollar for buying and selling at 67.40 and 67.50, they said. The rupee followed the same pattern, gaining Rs 3.16 in relation to euro for buying and selling at 104.51 and 104.61, they said.
