The Senate Standing Committee on Education was told on Tuesday that there was a shortfall of Rs 3 billion on the recurring side, which could negatively impact the performance of the universities.
The Committee, which met at Parliament House with Senator Rozina Alam Khan in the Chair, sought allocation of more funds for the higher education, observing that more funds should be allocated for improving standard of education.
Officials of Higher Education Commission (HEC) led by its chairman Dr Atta-ur-Rehman gave a detailed briefing on the mid-term development review and recurring budget of Officials of Higher Education Commission (HEC). The committee was of the view that the mid-term review would be helpful in appraisal of the utilisation of funds on various projects and other necessary development initiatives along with removal of various hurdles in the release of funds.
The Committee opposed the proposal of cut in the recurring grant of the HEC and observed that such a cut would have direct impact on the development side and would affect the enrolment and faculty development at higher levels. Earlier, Officials of Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Dr Attaur Rehman in his briefing informed the Committee about the budgetary position of various projects launched by the commission to boost education at higher level.

The meeting was attended by Senators Tahira Latif, Syed Tahir Hussain Mashadi, Dr Muhammad Said and Professor Muhammad Ibrahim Khan.
