The government is making legislation to prevent farmers from burning residues of crops because it adds to the environmental pollution and also reduces soil fertility. This was stated by Punjab Agriculture Secretary Javaid Iqbal Awan at a seminar on "optimum nutrients requirements of crops for sustained productivity".
He said that farmers should know the hazardous effects of burning crop residues. Prominent agriculture scientists, a large number of farmers and representatives of fertilisers of industry attended the seminar.
The Secretary Agriculture highlighted the importance of developing drought tolerant varieties due to water scarcity. He appreciated the efforts of AARI, Faisalabad for holding seminars on different topics and added these seminars help provide opportunity for the better interaction among the scientists.
He stressed the need for developing varieties giving better yield with less use of phosphatic fertiliser. Secretary agriculture informed that the government is providing 15,000 drills for the better and efficient use of phosphatic fertiliser.
Dr Muhammad Rashid, Director General Agriculture (Research), AARI Faisalabad in his address informed that sub-stations of AARI, Faisalabad at Arid Zone Research Institute, Bhakkar and Barani Agriculture Research Institute, Chakwal have successfully screened the germplasm which are drought tolerant and give higher yield with less water application. Scientists presented research papers on optimum nutrient requirements for crops and other issues related to plant nutrition.
