Punjab Secretary, Housing and Urban Development, Khizar Hayat Gondal has directed all the WASA Managing Directors (MD)s to ensure regular chlorinating of drinking water par to World Health Organisation standard, particularly during the monsoon season.
He was presiding over a high level meeting held in his office to suggest mitigation measures for faecal contamination of drinking water. The Director General, PCRWR, Dr M Aslam Tahir, Regional Director, Abdul Rauf, MD, WASA, Dr Javed Iqbal, RO, EPA, Usman-ul-Haq, Chemist, WASA Lab, Zainab Abbas Soharwardi, Assistant Chemist, Ali Ahmed Naseem Professor of Epidemiology, Institute of Public Health, Dr Farkhanda Kokab, Associate Professor, UET Sajjad Hayder and other senior officers attended the meeting.
The Provincial Secretary disclosed that faecal contamination has been traced in the distribution network due to various reasons, including rusting of water pipes of domestic lines and illegal usage of sucking water pumps in Lahore. However, he added, the source of water supply was not contaminated in Lahore. He appealed the consumers to replace out dated water pipe lines so that they could get germs free potable water.
The Secretary also directed to prepare comprehensive chlorinating plan ordered its provision in the next budget under O&M. While giving special instructions, he said that all MD WASAs should submit zoning plans of their cities till 20th June and make necessary arrangements to ensure 24-hour water supply through overhead reservoirs within two years.
