Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) has started a new modality "Brachytherapy Services" for treatment of patients suffering from prostate and cervix cancer. Inauguration ceremony of Dr Sarah Jafri Brachytherapy Unit in SIUT was held on Sunday at institute's Hanifa Suleman Dawood Urology and Transplant Oncology Centre.
Addressing the ceremony, Director SIUT Dr Adibul Hasan Rizvi praised the family of Dr Sarah Jafri, a renowned doctor of her time and one of the early graduates of Dow Medical College, for their help and donation for establishment of the unit.
Terming SIUT a unique hospital in the country, he said the institute provides free treatment to the patients with dignity besides taking care of all their medical needs. "Here the difference come and it become possible only by the support of community. That's the reason we never invited Prime Minister or President in our functions but those who share the philosophy of SIUT," he maintained.
Vice Admiral (R) Khalid M Mir, brother of late Dr Sarah Jafri and the trustee of the unit, said that another dream of his late sister has come true by the efforts of Dr Adib and his team.
He said that her sister was a dedicated doctor who devoted all of her time for her profession and serving the humanity. "At her dying-bed, Sarah asked us to distribute whatever she had to poor and handicapped and we are working according to her testament," he maintained.
Terming the unit first of its kind in the country, he said it would facilitate those who could not pay their bills. He requested the admirers and supporters of SIUT to come forward to strengthen the institute's initiatives.
Bashir Dawood while paying his thanks to the trustees of the unit, said that people donate to SIUT because of its team's dedication and sincerity towards their aim to serve humanity without any discrimination. He said that the trusties do the easier part, while its doctors who do the most difficult job by caring the people.
Later, a symposium was held on the subject that was jointly chaired by veteran doctors, Ali Muhammad Ansari and Sadiqa Jafary. Dr Altaf Hashmi and Dr Asad Abbas of SIUT, Dr Uzma Majeed of Shaukat Khanum Hospital and Research Center, Lahore and Dr Razvan Galalae of Christian Albrechts University, Germany discussed in the symposium the Brachytherapy techniques and its results in detail.
