Japan beat Australia 3-0 to secure third place at the Women's Asian Cup here on Sunday. Norio Sasaki's side opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Yuki Nagasato when she latched onto Yukari Kinga's cross and sent her shot over goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri.
The Matildas came agonisingly close a number of times. But it was Japan who took the initiative when they won a free kick 25 yards from goal 11 minutes from time, and Aya Miyama stepped up to send a fine effort into the net. Japan rounded off the victory in the 87th minute after a corner was cleared only as far as Homare Sawa on the edge of the area, and the midfielder sent a dipping shot into the back of the net.
