Balochistan and Fata: foreign elements creating law and order situation, says Rehman
The government has admitted that the foreign elements were involved in creating law and order in Fata and Balochistan, but it said that the unfortunate aspect of the issue was that some Pakistani citizens were being used by these foreigners.
This was stated by Rehman Malik, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Interior. Speaking in the Senate on Monday, he said that there is no doubt that foreign hand was there. The PPP-led coalition government came under some severe criticism when the parliament's Upper House resumed debate on law and order in the country, as some of them warned the government to do something before it is too late.
Malik said the government was trying hard to tackle the issue of law and order. He said there was sectarian violence in Parachinar where Sunni and Shia communities were clashing against each other. He said the government had taken 30 notable elders from both the sides on board and held Jirga to restore peace in the area.
"The government is fully aware of the situation and efforts are being made to bring normalcy in the area," Malik said. He hoped that a grand Jirga would soon be held in next two to three weeks to completely overcome the law and order situation in Kurram Agency.
Advisor to the Prime Minister urged the members sitting on both sides of the aisle to help the government in addressing the menace of terrorism and to restore peace across the country. Earlier, MQM Senator Abbas Komaili warned the government over deteriorating law and order situation in Parachinar. He said it is not Shia who raised arms against Sunni or vice. It is the foreign hand, which is disrupting the peace.
The federation will definitely be in great danger if the government failed to improve the situation on war footing. He regretted that the previous government did not make any serious effort to bring normalcy in Parachinar.
Most of the members grilled the PPP-led coalition government for its failure to improve the law and order situation. Senator S.M. Zafar of the PML (Q) said that law and order is bad, it is a reality. "The situation is worsening, it is a reality as well," he said. He regretted that PPP government had gone away from reconciliation. "It will not be a welcome statement but I say it that law and order was far better when the British ruled this part of the world," he added.
He opposed the Constitutional Package announced by PPP. The government is full of internal conflicts due to which the people's problems could not be addressed. The Senator said that Islamabad was being run by Asif Ali Zardari and Lahore by Nawaz Sharif and the fact is that both leaders were not directly responsible to the people as they are not part of the parliament. He said that PPP was going for selective reconciliation as the PML (Q) was excluded from this process. "Without PML (Q) you can do nothing including the passage of the constitutional package," he warned.
Senator Ayaz Jogazai urged the government to have good relations with neighbours for stable peace in the country. He criticised that Pakistan had not fulfilled its commitment of holding Mini Jirga as follow up of Grand Jirga for peace in Afghanistan. Senator Khalid Mehmood Soomro said that the government must fire all corrupt officials.
He said that women were being abducted in Sindh. He said that the government must set priorities. He acknowledged the government decision of scrapping the plan of constructing Kalabagh dam. He said that the government can generate 22,000 MW electricity from Tharcoal, which would be much cheaper from power, which was expected to be generated by Kalabagh.
