Leaders of Pakistan lawyers' movement on Monday said that purpose of long march is not to destabilise the government but only to mount pressure for restoration of the deposed judges. They assured that the lawyers' long march would be "completely peaceful" as they have no personal agenda.
President High Court Bar Rawalpindi Bench, Sardar Asmatullah, President Islamabad Bar, Haroon Rashid, former Justice Tariq Mehmood and advocate Athar Min-Allah, spokesman of the deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry briefed reporters about the long-march outside the Supreme Court building.
President High Court Bar Rawalpindi Bench, Sardar Asmatullah, revealing the route for the long march said that in the first stage the long march would reach Sukhar and on June 10 it will reach Multan where deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry would address the rally.
He said that the participants would leave Multan for Lahore at 9 am on June 11. The deposed Chief Justice would address them when they arrive in Lahore and the march would leave for Islamabad at 9am on June 12. Processions from various cities and towns would join the marchers along the route.
Sardar Asmatullah said that the long march would be given a grand reception in front of the High Court building after reaching at Rawalpindi from where it would move towards Islamabad via Murree road. "We would sit in front of the parliament till our demand of restoration of judges is accepted", he said. He said that non-functional judges would also accompany the long march.
He urged the present government to honour its commitment, made in Murree deceleration about the judge's restoration. He said that the march was being taken out to create public awareness about the need for reinstating the independent judges. "The lawyers will not be provoked and they will not storm any buildings or damage any property", he added.
Sardar Asmatullah said that the legal fraternity has completely rejected the constitutional package for the restoration of judges. Athar Min-Allah said that their protest would be peaceful. "June 12 is the date for the restoration of judges", he said.
He said delay in reinstatement of judges is damaging the credibility of the democratic forces, who are ruling the country. "The public wants correct decision from their elected representatives", he said. He said that those who have prepared the constitutional package have invited the confrontation with the public. He said that the constitutional package would actually amount to indemnify the unconstitutional acts of the President Musharraf taken on November 2.
