The 25-member delegation representing Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka attended a meeting with the Chairman, Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (Tevta), Khalid Mahmood and Secretary, Arshad Bhatti. The Course Co-ordinator of Saarc delegation, Dr Javaid Humayun informed Business Recorder on Monday while visiting the Secretariat Tevta.
The visit to Tevta and its institutions was to give the delegates an opportunity of interacting with local institutions and stakeholders working in the area of skill development and vocational training, he said. Humayun also said that Tevta has been recognised for its outstanding work to promote technical education and vocational training across Punjab.
'Exchange of delegations among Saarc countries, would help regional people to share their experiences and skills and hence accelerating the development process in the region' he viewed. Further, Humayun maintained that the interaction and co-operation among Saarc countries will enable the participants to understand with better clarity the importance of skills development and vocational training and help formulate, execute, monitor and evaluate policies, progress and strategies in this field.
Tevta Chairman gave a detail briefing on its performance said that on the recommendations of industry and in accordance with the government's policy, Tevta has introduced special three-month short courses to produce semi-skilled force for the industry. Furthermore, about 100,000 semi skilled workers have already been trained in four phases under this programme.
In addition, 25,000 internees would be admitted in the fifth phase of short courses on different trades to be started June 11 (today). Moreover, Tevta has increased enrolment of students at its 413 institutes with a figure of 53,000 in 2000 to more than 200,000 in 2007.
