Pakistan Ambassador to the United States Hussain Haqqani has reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to eliminate terrorism in all its forms from the region by formulating a new strategy as earlier strategy has failed.
"No strategy was formulated to fight terror after 9/11 in Afghanistan and Pakistan. We are in the process of formulating the new strategy to fight terror from political, military, socio-economic and ideological dimensions as PPP enjoys the support of the masses. We will succeed far better than the government which used its intelligence service to chase its political opponents," he told CNN.
"There is a new Sheriff in Islamabad and the Pakistan government wants to work with the US co-operatively and with conviction to make sure that Pakistan, Afghanistan and US are all partners in war on terror," he said. The new Pakistan government obtained people's vote by telling them that PPP will eliminate terrorism from the country. In the process the PPP lost its leader Benazir Bhutto.
"Therefore, we are committed to acting on actionable intelligence ourselves the moment we have actionable intelligence Pakistan will act in partnership with the USA and Afghanistan," he added. The new government was trying to prepare and equip Frontier Constabulary as a counter-terrorism force with US support.
Responding to a query, he said the people of Pakistan in February elections repudiated President Pervez Musharraf and his domestic policies. The parliament will decide what to do with the President and what to do about the policy aspects in Pakistan.
The theme of Benazir Bhutto was always reconciliation. President Musharraf should not be pushed out. He also should show statesmanship as Pakistanis needs to come together as they face big challenges, including economic and above all the problem of terrorism, which Benazir Bhutto felt very strongly about.
Time has come for a negotiated settlement about restoring Constitution and allowing political personalities to continue. To a question, he said if he had the knowledge of Osama Bin Laden he would have earned $50 million. There has been tremendous failure in chasing Osama Bin Laden since Tora Bora and opportunity was missed because of failure to share intelligence by agencies of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and US. There has to be real time co-operation between the intelligence services of US, Afghanistan, and Pakistan and that alone will get Osama and his cohorts, he added.
