Partly Facetious: know where true power emanates from

"Did you hear what happened in the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) meeting?"
Published June 10, 2008

"Did you hear what happened in the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) meeting?"
"No and I don't care."
"Why not? ECC is the highest economic decision making body in the country and given the issues that the common man is facing today, namely, the power crisis, the wheat shortage, the inflationary pressures, I would have assumed that you would have been very interested in what happened in the meeting."
"I don't think decisions are being taken in the ECC."
"It's not true. I don't think the PPP Co-Chairman cares too much about the economy."
"That is what Zardari has in common with Musharraf, I suppose."
"Musharraf could ignore the economy because it wasn't doing too badly when he took over and then came 9/11 and aid started flowing in, but Zardari can't ignore the economy you know."
"But anyway Zardari doesn't attend the ECC."
"True but that doesn't mean anything. Besides he can summon anyone he wants even when the ECC is meeting."
"I am sure he wouldn't do it purposely and he would only call a minister who may not have been that critical for the meeting."
"Wrong, on both counts."
"Whatever do you mean?"
"The Minister for Water and Power was summoned by Zardari when the ECC was in progress and we all know that there is no more important portfolio, given that we have a severe shortage of water and power in this country."
"Ah yes, it sets a bad precedence."
"The precedence was set a long time ago, my friend. After all it reiterates the adage: know where the true power is emanating from."
"I guess but still..."
"There are no buts."
"I guess buts are not tolerated."
"Maybe, Aitzaz Ahsan has learnt that by now."
