The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Saturday declared that success of the coalition setup depends on as early as possible restoration of judiciary as on November 2, 2007 position and ouster of President Pervez Musharraf.
A consultative meeting of the PML-N was held under the chairmanship of the PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif at his Raiwind residence on Saturday. Among others, the meeting was attended by Raja Zafarul Haq, Rafiq Tarar, Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Ishaq Dar, Javaid Hashmi, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Ahsan Iqbal, and Khawaja Asif.
In the meeting, the members of the PML-N committee on proposed constitutional amendment package, briefed the participants about its recommendations. The PML-N supports proposed constitutional amendments which are in consonance with the Charter of Democracy (CoD). However, the PML-N body has prepared counter-proposals on those points of the constitutional package vis-à-vis judiciary on which the party have some reservations.
Sources in the PML-N told Business Recorder that the PML-N leadership decided in Saturday's meeting to exert more pressure on the coalition partner ie PPP for immediate ouster of Pervez Musharraf and restoration of deposed judges through a resolution in the Parliament. The meeting also discussed the constitutional amendment package and also decided to extend support to the PPP for the restoration of 1973 Constitution in its original shape, the sources claimed.
After the meeting, PML-N secretary information Ahsan Iqbal told reporters that judges' restoration in accordance with the Murree Declaration was main point of joining the coalition setup by the PML-N. If the judges are not restored through a resolution, it would be difficult to continue the alliance", he said. He, however, said Asif Ali Zardari had assured Nawaz Sharif that the judges would be restored in accordance with Murree Declaration.
Ahsan also said that the PML-N is fully prepared to bring impeachment motion against Pervez Musharraf. "We are just awaiting a green signal from other coalition partners in this regard", he added.
Answering a question with regard to budgetary allocations for 29 judges of the Supreme Court through Finance Bill, Ahsan said that his party has clear stance about PCO judges. "Making budgetary allocations for more judges of the apex court through Finance Bill does not mean regularisation of PCO judges", he added. He also said the PML-N is trying its best to continue the alliance because in the present situation, a single party cannot handle the complicated affairs of the state.
When asked that Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry had also taken oath under PCO, Ahsan said Iftikhar Chaudhry had already compensated this mistake by refusing to bow down before a dictator. That was the reason, the PML-N was struggling for the restoration of all the deposed judges, including Iftikhar Chaudhry, he said. When asked about the prospective candidate for the President after ouster of Pervez Musharraf, he said the decision in this regard would be taken at appropriate time.
