Parliamentary leader of PML-N Nisar Ali Khan said on Monday that his party has reservations over the clause dealing with increase in the number of apex court judges, incorporated in the Finance Bill 2008. He said that PML-N would have abstained if there had been voting for the passage of Clause 18 of the Finance Bill 2008 for an increase of Supreme Court judges to 29.
He said it was confusion created among media that the party had consented with all clauses of the Bill passed on Sunday, and added that "we had voted for all the clauses, except the one relating to the judiciary". Nisar said the speech delivered by Ayaz Amir on Sunday was the policy of the party.
Hayat Haraj said that PML-N's stance regarding reservations over judges' clause was unjustifiable as the Bill has already been passed with majority. He said that time and again, the PML-N leader had also admitted before media persons that the clause had been incorporated with the consent of his party.
He said the party could have said `No', or moved an amendment motion at the time when the Bill was being passed, and added that talking about reservations after the passage of the bill was not justified. He said that Senate had also been bypassed in this regard, as the number of judges "can only be increased" through an Act of Parliament. He said that media had also been misguided regarding the matter. "Are we playing with the media gallery?" Haraj questioned.
Dr Donya Aziz said that confusion was being created not only in the House but also across the country in the name of 'reservations' over the judges' issue in the Finance Bill. Marvi Memon said the passage of judges' clause had indemnified the PCO.
