Oxford scholar Dr Tariq Said Ramadan, visiting professor at Oxford University, will give a talk on "Globalisation and the Redefinition of Muslim Identity: Challenges and Opportunities" on Friday.
Dr Ramadan, 46, is based in Geneva, and recognised as a prominent academician and theologian on the issues of Muslim immigrants in Europe, and has put forth a number of interesting commentaries on Islam in a bid to bridge Islamic values and Western culture. He is also debating the complex issue of applying Islamic teachings in the context of a pluralistic society.
He was included in the Time magazine's list of top 100 thinkers and innovators of the 21st century. The scholar has evoked both respect and criticism on account of the intensity and scope of his thought.
Dr Ramadan attained MA degree in philosophy and French literature and also a doctorate in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Geneva University. He is also a visiting professor at Erasmus University in the Netherlands.
Among his 20 published books are: In the Footsteps of the Prophet, Lessons from the Life of Muhammad, Western Muslims and the Future of Islam, Violence, War and Peace in Islam, Islam, the West, and the Challenge of Modernity as well as To Be a European Muslim.
