The number of foreign troops killed in Afghanistan last month was the highest since the fall of the Taliban in late 2001, figures showed Wednesday. June was also the second month in a row that foreign troop fatalities in Afghanistan surpassed those in Iraq, according to the Internet service icasualties.org.
The figures showed that 45 Nato and US troops were killed in combat, attacks and accidents in Afghanistan in June. In Iraq the figure was 30. The majority of the casualties were US soldiers. The New York Times put the figure at 46 for Afghanistan and 31 in Iraq. In May, the first month in which Afghan troop fatalities overtook those in Iraq, some 31 foreign soldiers were killed in Afghanistan compared to 21 in Iraq.
