Population Welfare Department (PWD) is implementing a 3-tier strategy to sensitise population planning in the province through proactive advocacy campaigns, enhancement and improvement in the operational efficiency of service delivery outlets and active community participation in the population planning programmes.
Minister for Population Welfare Punjab Mrs Neelam Jabbar Chaudhry said this here on Friday. She said that 1,400 Family Welfare Centres (FWCs) had already been set up while 300 more centres were in the pipeline. Likewise, 53 mini hospitals, at the level of Tehsils, were also going to be established to provide vasectomy services. The purpose is to attain balance between resources and population growth and promote family planning as an entitlement and voluntary choice, she pointed out.
While talking to a delegation, Neelam said that the population welfare programmes were aimed at improving mother and neonatal health and reducing population growth rate from 1.92 percent to 1.59 percent.
The department has set up a well-co-ordinated service delivery network including RHS-A Centres, Family Welfare Centres, Mobile Service Units and Male Mobilisers, down to the level of a union council, she added. Likewise, non-programme outlets including active participation of NGOs, Ulema, media men, LHVs and other community leaders had been asked to realise the benefits of a small family to the people at large, she maintained.
She said that population planning programme has also been launched in the Chakwal and Muzaffargarh districts in collaboration with UNFPA. She further said that 3,300 male mobilisers, employed each for every union council, will focus male segment of the population for the provision of family planning services. She appreciated the activities of the department and the related NGOs for motivating the people to keep their families according to their resources.
