The Lahore High Court on Friday entertained a petition for regular hearing and issued notices to Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah and other respondents. Islmail Seela, a defeated candidate from the Faisalabad PP-70, was seeking the minister's disqualification and told the court to stop the Election Commission from issuing his notification as a returned candidate.
Seela argued that Sanaullah had contested the by-election when he was holding the profitable office of provincial law minister. He said the latter had first taken oath as law minister in Chief Minister Dost Muhammad Khosa's era and repeated his oath in the Shahbaz Sharif's cabinet.
He said Article 63 of the Constitution says a candidate "shall be disqualified to contest the election if he holds an office of profit". He also claimed that Sanaullah had misused his office to secure his victory and accused him of rigging.
