The Singapore Medicine (SM) organised a seminar on Thursday on "Gastroenterology and Oncology updates" to spread awareness regarding health care facilities in Singapore.
Indrawati Liauw, Manager Healthcare Services, Dr Steven Joseph Mesenas, Dr Lui Hock Foong, Dr Bader Faiyaz Zuberi, Dr Zaigham Abbas, Dr S.M Munir, Dr Zakiuddin Ahmed, Dr Foo Kian Fong and Dr Abid Jameel spoke on the occasion. In 2003 the government launched the SM initiative to develop, maintain and promote Singapore as a world-class healthcare destination and as Asia's leading hub.
They said that 0.41 million visitors came to Singapore in 2006 specifically for healthcare, compared to 0.22 million patients in 2002, reflecting an 86 percent increase during four years, "which shows the phenomenal success of SM". Singapore's healthcare services have a heritage of excellent quality, safety and trustworthiness, coupled with advanced research and international accreditation. It has received numerous accolades, giving patients and their families' peace of mind.
There are seven public hospitals, 17 private hospitals and six specialist national medical centres in Singapore and all these facilities are carefully integrated, the speakers said.
They said that Singapore is a true multi-faceted regional medical hub, not only for medical services for patients, but also as a meeting place for medical professionals for conferences and training, and as a base for healthcare consultancy and operations management. Several doctors in the country are world-renowned and are respected in their fields, and trained in some of the best centres in the world.
They also benefit from a growing number of international professionals and multi-national healthcare companies that have headquarters in Singapore, sharing their expertise and research. They concluded that doctors in Singapore have been behind key clinical milestones for a whole range of medical care ranging from health screening, eye, heart and brain surgeries, to cancer treatment.
