Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer has said that to solve issues of the masses more powers should be vested in district governments. He was talking to participants of 88th Management Course here on Tuesday. He said district governments had overall performed well in all the four provinces of the country.
The Governor said that next year elections of the district governments would be conducted by Pakistan People's Party. Salmaan Taseer opined that he personally was in favour of devolution of power at grass root level.
Answering a query from the participants of the course about rising inflation, he, said increase in prices of food items and petrol was an international phenomenon, however, hoarding of commodities and problems accruing in trade of petrol were the responsibility of the government, he declared.
He said on every Monday large number of people came into contact with him, 100 percent of them made query about rising cost of commodities, he pointed out. Punjab Governor referring to a survey said that 95 percent of people here wished that coalition government succeeded.
Taseer said that seven million below the poverty line families registered with Bait-ul-Maal would be provided food items on concession rates under Food Stamp Programme (FSP). On a query of Rahat-ul-Ain Chief Instructor of National Management College, he said there had been much expansion in educational facilities in universities in the Province. He averred that a university that received Rs 1 billion earlier in annual budget funding was now receiving Rs 3 billion under the same head.
Regarding funding at school level in the province, the Governor said lot of funds were being available at that level, however, prudent decisions at political level to streamline things at level of educational department was necessary, he added.
